Embossed letter/image printing involved different type of embossing technology (digital & traditional), different embossed finish (shiny & matte) result, different time frame for production, purpose, even emboss printing cost per unit. Here are some basic rules that leads the best embossed printing results.
Types of Embossing on Paper Stock
Embossed (raised printing) and debossed (recessed printing), there are two terms, both print finish are opposite each other but printing process is the same. the different is only making a design/text dies intension purpose emboss or deboss.
- Blind Embossed 2. Foil Embossed (Registered Embossed) 3. Ink Embossed
Blind Embossed
Blind embossing is a process where a design/text is raised front side and backside recessed after applying balanced pressure placing paper sheet (blank sheet of paper) between 2 metal die (male and female die). Raised Design Color Remain the Sheet Color
Foil Embossed (Glazed)
Foil embossing is a 5 step process.
1. First is first, creating a vector artwork following the guidelines on intended embossed content.
2. Making a metal die on a hard metal like magnesium or brass, to keep in mind short term or long terms die used, it’s a one time investment go with brass metal for long terms used die with 2 mm thick using a CNC machine with optimum accuracy.
3. A sheet of paper is printed digital/offset/screen, except the area to be foil printing is left blank on the paper sheet,
4. Once normal printing work is done on a paper sheet, then using a male block (raised artwork on the metal) intended foil color is printed on paper sheet using leaf printing machine (hot stamping) is applied on the intended blank area of pre-printed offset/screen/digital sheet.
5. To create the 3d effect on the foil printed design, the sheet is placed between male and female die and foil printed design is aligned center to the male and female dye (fit into each other), then applied pressure and causing foil print text/design is raised. Silver and Gold Foil are most common foil printing and embossing to enticing customer. Except for silver and gold, red, blue, black, pink, green, there are so many color you can match your brand logo color.
Flashy embossed printing is a costly process, if being out of budget go with premium quality print and spot UV business card.
Ink Embossed (Registered Embossed)
Ink embossed has variety of application as well as screen printing/digital printing/offset printing. which one is the best depends on customer’s print demand volume and finish.
Embossing process is a time taking process either modern or traditional. Screen printing and digital for low volume print (business card & letterhead) where offset printing ink embossed is the best for high volume catalog, & book cover.
Process involve design creation, printing onto sheet, making block and dye, embossing and cutting & finishing etc.
Inked Embossing Process
Traditional embossing involve 2 metal dies 1 for raised design and 2nd is recessed design on the metal plate so that both die can fit into each other same position placing intended sheet for embossing. Design creation is major role while creating a vector design artwork that create an impactful embossed effect.
Inked Embossing
With the use of this embossed printing technique, the client’s major approaches can be done in professional ways. These approaches are call attention to important information, Add texture and visual interest, Increase perception of value, Highlight Logos and Brands.
Thermography Process
Best Embossing Rules
Best emboss printing result needed, there are 5-6 key points from design creation to executions. Each and every step is crucial and need to process expert supervision.
1. Appropriate Design Artwork
To get the intended embossing result, design come first. the concept is bigger and thicker design or font style produced the higher raised result thinner, design line art work thickness keep minimum 5pt, and artwork for die creation color format “CYMK” C-0, Y-0, M-0, K-100
2. Best Suitable Paper Stock
During emboss process, the fiber of paper stock stretches to give a intended design shape off the paper stock (3d look), that’s why handmade paper is better compare to the mill coated paper in terms of embossed text or design. if pressure increased for higher raising on the mill paper causing paper stock braked and give a unwanted result.
3. Optimum Accuracy of Block & Die
High end accuracy metal dye create a deeper 3d look impression. I do create a high label of laser engraving machine (high intensity & accurate beam) that create a hard & thick male and female die to produce image imprint on the paper sheet.
4. Avoid Intricated Design and Thin Font That Produce Lower Performance
Equal pressure and bold design artwork produce best result. Thin line artwork and intricated design are hard to deeper engraved die, resulting lower quality embossed print result. So trying clear shape and bold font for premium quality embossed result.
Embossed Printing Machines
We have a manual and motorized both types of embossing machine. For a small size and low volume emboss print project (visiting card, letterhead) using hand press and hydraulic machine for larger size and bulk embossing project.

Most Popular Embossing Methods
There are various methods of embossed letter processing or images.
- Thermography (powder resin on wet ink & heat)
- Embossing Through Special Screen Printing Ink
- Die Press Embossing Process
- Manual Embossing Through UV Coating
- Digital UV Coating (Scodix print)
These above 5 ways embossing on paper or cardboard are most popular with the embossing process. Each of them is the best in terms of quality. all these are enough differences in each other here I am going to dive in.
Powder Embossing it’s a very old process kind of powder known embossing powder highly used in the terms of letterpress printing machine where a petroleum-based ink is used sooner a paper print-ready, a powder is applied on the wet ink and heated and left it till paper dry and after a few minutes scattered powder get removed and ultimately letters raised product ready.
It can be done on single color printing products. Today it is less used in printing terms.
Fewer people apply this process at their home for personalized use like a greeting card but quality accuracy of the content not so clear compared to other embossing processes. In place of using printing ink uses a home-made embossing maker used clear glue and apply colorful embossing powder heated with the heat gun to embossed products.
Special Embossing Screen Printing Ink, another one tactic of embossing is screen printing applied on during Printing Visiting Card, Letterhead Envelope, and Invitation card mostly gets printed raised letter applying GLOSS quality screen printing ink. Quality of embossing is based on screen mesh and ink quality but there is a limitation of raising letter up to 0.01-0.02 mm height.
Only one-color can be embossed at a time.
Due to the decline of screen printing trends in terms of stationery printing fewer people liked it. The Best Screen Printing Ink for embossing letter Brand Name 1. Sunglow 2. Rainbow (Quality of ink GLOSS)
Die Press Embossing Process, the most popular embossing process it can be customized as well as required a raised letter up to 0.5mm-1 mm, it depends on the die engraved in. To make a die for a long run embossing process better to use thicker Metallic Sheet 3-5 mm. Die made of brass metal is long-lasting.
There are two types of die making process
i) Die making through applying acid on metals is a time taking and comparatively low quality die. This term was most popular before 10-15 years back. you need a minimum time frame up to 24 hours and price comes around INR 15-16 per square inch.
ii) Laser Die Making its super quality of making die process here an artwork is made fully computerized it’s a costly process where a design area is vaporized with the laser beam through a high-density laser beam.
For irregular depth and micro design
Metal Die made of Brass, Zinc | Best Perform Die Thickness 3-5 mm
Automated/ Manual Embossing UV Coating it’s a commercial embossing process mostly dome on Product Catalog, Brochure, Children Book, etc.
Size can be UV coated at a time A3, A2, A1 and 28″x40″
Basically, It is based on the screen printing and ultralight process and getting done semi-automated process first of all content is printing digital or offset printing process and thereafter on the intended content to be embossed is applied a transparent UV coating with the help of mesh and paper sheet passed out through ultra-violet light to cure it. Ultimately the area covered with coating text or images raised.
The good thing is the backside of the paper with no effect. Price per pcs comes very low.
It is the best for the bulk quantity the basic size A3 setup cost comes INR 1000/- Minimum and setup time 4-6 hours. and per seat embossing cost goes 1-2 Rupees.
Digital UV Coating it’s not even the best quality all of the embossed process but the fastest way to get an embossed letter.
There are so many advantages to digital UV Coating.
- The good thing is no impact on the backside
- Second is no need to make a metal or polymer die.
- The third one you could get silver, gold, and any required color embossing at the same time.
- It’s an instant process, within hour you can get it.
- No cost for personalized embossing
- Spot UV coating and Foil stamping can be done at a time
The best effect of digital UV and hot stamping on velvet and mate laminated surface.
The bad thing is the embossing cost goes too high. this is idle for low volume, high quality, instant embossing, and personalized products.

Best Paper Selection for Embossing
To get the appealing result of embossing print on business card, choosing a right paper stock is a major factor. Technically, in embossing terms the fiber of paper is stretched after receiving a pressure, so stretchable paper stock is the best paper stock for embossing terms.
Cotton made paper stock 350gsm to 700gsm is the best, hand made paper stock is the ideal for making embossed finish product.
Latest Technology
There are two types of the embossing process
1. Quality of ink with heat printing method as crystal UV
2. Through male and female metal die pressure
Crystal UV Embossed CardFollowing option no.1: Front embossed, and backside remain, technically when a liquid chemical applied on stuff on the front side (targeted object) and when the targeted object comes in contact with heat, then chemical raised upside and the product becomes ready with a classy embossed look. This Professionality looks of Crystal UV Embossed Printing highly admired by higher Institutions or organizations.
Option no. 2. Embossing letter printing through male and female metal dies pressure, these dies are made of brass, zinc or aluminum in this embossing process required male and female for each object you required to emboss, first of all, make two computerized metal raised-die and de-raised-die, and keep an object between the male and female die and pressurized upside then front side embossed and backside became de-embossed. You could have been seen very lovable invitation card you that memories again and again
When we touch and feel it give very imaging feelings as like logo or brand image, the logic behind it is the area we want to Emboss printed area or a blind made a (zink or brass) metal die set of male (raised) and female (de raised) according to stuff thickness as per embossing height depends on stuff thickness people make inexpensive materials to high light their brand. Whenever printed paper come into contact between the male and female die and pressed then produced embossed letter printing.
Embossed vs Debossed
what’s in more demand? This ques. generally indulged at the time of the client making decisions for printing. It’s important to know.
Embossed and Debossed are opposite to each other.
To create the Embossed Artwork look need to female die and male die of the intended artwork, first of all, a male die is fixed with base, placing a paper between both male and female die upside, sufficient pressure is applied on the male die to create an embossing impact on the paper, this process is done through annual and automated depending on the size of artwork suit best for it.
The final output look of the stuff front side design comes up and downside of stuff debossed
Debossed Artwork is created by pressing a Heated Metal Male Die on to the object that is kept on the hard base (metal plate) and the intended artwork imprinted imprint sunken against the surface.
Eventually, the design looks inner side of stuff surface, for the best quality embossing need to be soft stuff.
Embossed vs 3D Printing
Embossed Print, a letter/design is raised off the paper stock surface, by placing card stock between 2 metal (male & female) die, and applying pressure by manual/hydraulic. There is a limited option for raising letter/design height. This application is commonly used for making luxury finish business card, leather purse, presentation folder, invite card etc.
3d Printing, it’s a digital printing process adding layer by layer by melting material (plastic, resin, metal) to give a 3d shape. Here you can produce required raising (full thickness). Its a process of manufacturing a customized real product/parts. (automobile part, toys, customized products),
Embossing vs Engraving
Embossing terms, content is reproduced front side raised off the card surface and backside into the card surface debossed by pressing a metal heated force on the surface. In this process content produced by stuff fiber is stretched by the metal dye pressure.
Engraving is a computerized process of content creation by the laser beam that burns the intended stuff and produce a content/design on it. It’s a digital process. Â
